The Rushmore Mall is the first of many locations for joint-training between Ellsworth Air Force Base and the RCPD. Future locations are scheduled to include local courthouses, airports, and other high-traffic, at-risk environments.

Security Forces members used this opportunity to build relationships with their civilian counterparts and familiarize their K-9s with areas around the city.

The goal of the training is two-fold: become familiar with the layout of the buildings to provide a better idea of how to approach and handle a situation, and allow the handlers to gain a different perspective from civilian law enforcement.

Chasity Mitchell, the family matters coordinated with the Air Force Sergeants Association, holds the Volunteer Excellence Award at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., Sept. 19, 2017. The Volunteer Excellence Award recognizes federal civilians, family members, military retirees, and federal retirees with exceptional long term community support – not just a single act or achievement.

The Ellsworth Diversity Council is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through a variety of events such as a food tasting, fiesta night and traditional Hispanic games.

Hispanic Heritage month began in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 15.

Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and is significant to Hispanic Heritage Month because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

The traje de luces (suit of lights) is the traditional clothing that Spanish bullfighters wear. The term originates from the sequins and reflective threads of gold or silver.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 in the United States, and recognizes the military service of Hispanic and Latino Americans as well as their heritage and culture.

The 28th Bomb Wing honored the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks during a Patriots Day memorial at Ellsworth Air Force Base, Sept. 11, 2017.
