Base B-1s returning home

Several B-1B Lancers and aircrews assigned to the base who have been operating out of another location while repairs are being made to the base runway will return home Sept. 15.

The base runway was completely shut down for a month while work was done on the keel - or center section - of the base's 13,297-foot runway. A 3,400-foot stretch of the 40-foot-wide keel section on the south end of the runway was deteriorating. This section of the airfield is where the base's B-1B Lancers land and takes most of the impact.

During the month of no flights, crews continued their mission training at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, where other B-1B Lancers are stationed. This is nothing out of the ordinary and is common practice when repairs are being made to an installation's runway.
